Potential for codends with shortened lastridge ropes to replace mandated selection devices in demersal trawl fisheries

چکیده

In many trawl fisheries, codend size selectivity is supplemented by adding selection devices to the gear. Barents Sea gadoid fishery, combining diamond mesh codends with sorting grids compulsory. However, use of increases costs and complexity gear, causing discontent among fishermen prompting researchers seek alternative solutions. Lastridge ropes are attached selvedges codend. this study, we tested effect shortening lastridge two different sizes on cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogramus aeglefinnus), redfish (Sebastes spp.). Shortening 15% increased opening during fishing process, which significantly improved size-selective properties codends. Further, L50 values were always higher for in short configuration. Therefore, shortened may be a simpler they applicable other fisheries additional used.

Effect of Codend Circumference on the Size Selection of Square-Mesh Codends in Trawl Fisheries

It is well established that increasing mesh number in the circumference of a diamond-mesh trawl codend can reduce size selection for round fish, whereas selection for flat fish species is unaffected. This effect has also been documented in Mediterranean trawl fisheries. In contrast, no information is available with regard to the effect of increasing mesh number in the circumference of square-me...

When does fishing lead to more fish? Community consequences of bottom trawl fisheries in demersal food webs.

Bottom trawls are a globally used fishing gear that physically disturb the seabed and kill non-target organisms, including those that are food for the targeted fish species. There are indications that ensuing changes to the benthic invertebrate community may increase the availability of food and promote growth and even fisheries yield of target fish species. If and how this occurs is the subjec...

Harvest Strategies for an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management in Western Mediterranean Demersal Fisheries

The serious overfishing of most Mediterranean stocks demands urgent reforms of the management measures aiming to guarantee the sustainability of resources, notably when compared with the improvement observed in other European areas. The new EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) constitutes an excellent opportunity to introduce the changes needed for such a reform. According to this CFP, all European...

Trawl Selectivity in the Barents Sea Demersal Fishery

This chapter provides a general overview of the Barents Sea demersal trawl fishery. First, it reviews historical catch levels and current biomass status of four commercially important demersal species (cod, haddock, Greenland halibut, and redfish) and includes an overview of their management plan that has been carried out by the Joint Norwegian–Russian commission. Then, it presents the evolutio...

Modelling potential impacts of bottom trawl fisheries on soft sediment biogeochemistry in the North Sea†

Bottom trawling causes physical disturbance to sediments particularly in shelf areas. The disturbance due to trawling is most significant in deeper areas with softer sediments where levels of natural disturbance due to wave and tidal action are low. In heavily fished areas, trawls may impact the same area of seabed more than four times per year. A single pass of a beam trawl, the heaviest gear ...
